Located on the
Northwest shore of Lake Ontario,
Toronto stands at the present
time as the fifth most populous city in
North America, and number 46 in the
entire world. With 2.5 million
residents, Toronto
occupies the central sector of the
Greater Toronto Area, which
is also known as the Golden Horseshoe,
boasting a total population of eight
million people.
While not the political capital of
Canada, Toronto is
recognized as the economic capital of
Canada, and is also
recognized internationally as a top
global financial city. The top leading
businesses that drive Toronto's
financial heartbeat are
telecommunications, transportation,
finance, aerospace, computer software,
medical research, education as well as a
burgeoning and multifaceted media
industry. |

Toronto has
long been a destination and starting off point
for people relocating to Canada from all four
corners of the globe. As a result, Toronto's
overall population comprises of a unique
multitude of ethnicities, and
real
estate in Toronto seems to go nowhere but
up.
The people of Toronto enjoy a
relatively low crime rate along with a
statistically high standard of living. In
turn, Toronto is regularly listed
as one of the worlds most livable cities by
Economist Intelligence Unit and The Mercer
Quality of Living Survey. Toronto's
high standard of living does come at a cost
however; as the city has also been rated as the
most expensive Canadian city to live in by the
same two organizations.
The history of Toronto
is as extensive as it is colorful, and begins in
1750 with the founding of Fort RouilleŽon the
site that is the current home of the Exhibition
grounds. At that time, the area was
occupied by Huron Indians who had acquired the
lands by vanquishing the Iroquois a few hundred
years earlier. The name Toronto is
derived from the Iroquois word "tkaronto" which
roughly translates into "trees growing in
water".
Toronto was twice the capital of Canada
but only for brief periods each time. First,
from 1849-1852 as the result of unrest in
Montreal and then again from 1856-1858 when the
seat of power was relocated to Quebec until
1866. When the province of Ontario was created
in 1867, Toronto was established
as its capital.
