Located directly
north of Toronto is the town of
Markham, which is one of the many
towns and cities that make up the
greater Toronto area. As one of the
fastest growing towns in Canada,
Markham is also recognized as the
"high tech capital" of Canada due to the
high number of high tech businesses that
have made Markham their base for
Canadian operations.
Presently Markham is comprised of
seven different communities named
Markham Village, Cornell,
Unionville, Wismer Common, Stouffville,
Milliken and Thornhill. With a current
population of around 300,000, Markham
is experiencing the same growing pains
that so many other cities and towns of
the Greater Toronto Area are feeling. In
fact, over half of the residents of
Markham were born in a foreign
country. |

Markham was first
settled in 1794 and was incorporated as a town
in 1972. Due to its rapid rate of growth
Markham is now ranked as the fourth most
populous municipality in the Greater Toronto
Area. While Markham has been undergoing
development, the planners overseeing it have
made point of preserving much of Markham's
historical past by declaring "heritage streets"
that preserve the ambiance of the town’s
historical past.
Markham does have some major highways
that pass through or near it, including but not
excluded to Hwy 404 from Toronto to Newmarket, a
toll highway named Hwy 407 that traverses north
of Toronto and connects Markham with
Brampton, Vaughan and Burlington. Markham
is located close to the Toronto/Buttonville
Municipal Airport, which is on the list of
Canada's top ten airports.
