Brampton
is one of the many cities that make up
the Greater Toronto Area
in Ontario Canada. The last census that
was taken in Brampton was
in 2006, and at that time it registered
433,806 residents, making it one of the
fastest growing cities in Canada.
Between 1996 and 2001, the South Asian
population of Brampton almost
effectively doubled from 34,000 to
63,000. In fact, it is immigration in
general that can be credited with the
majority of Brampton's
recent population boom. At
present, visible minorities comprise a
full 40.16 percent of the total
population of Brampton, with South
Asians making up the largest portion of
that population segment. |

Brampton has
been steadily growing since 1920 when it
registered 8,000 people in the first accurate
census count. Since the early fifties the
population of Brampton effectively
doubled every ten years, until the beginning of
the nineties when the population increase began
to quicken in pace. .
For many decades Brampton was the
home of a huge flower and horticulture
production industry, thus earning it the moniker
"The Flower Town of Canada". Presently,
Brampton is the home base of The
Canadian Forces Army Reserve Unit known as The
Lorn Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment).
While Brampton is by no means
recognized as an economic powerhouse in Canada,
it does have a solid economic base that supports
the community. Some of the many major companies
that are represented in Brampton
include the likes of Coca-Cola Bottling, Daimler
Chrysler Canada, Para Paints, Nortel, Ford, MD
Robotics, Frito Lay Canada, Canadian Tire,
Parkinson Coach line, The Hudson Bay Company,
and Nestle.
Brampton is also strategically
located close by to Toronto
Pearson International Airport which is located
in the nearby city of Mississauga. The residents
of Brampton also have easy access
to several major transportation routes including
Hwy 401 from Toronto, Hwy 410 running north
through the center of the city, and Hwy 407
which runs along the southern sector of the
city.
